Natural Beauties

In celebration of Earth Day, I have compiled a list of my favorite Earth-friendly beauty brands whose products I’ve not only tried, but back 100%. Here they are (in no particular order):

1. L’OCCITANE - With no use of chemical treatments or fertilizers, L’Occitane exposes customers to some of the purest ingredients from the Mediterranean. Ingredients such as immortelle are hand-harvested and distilled organically within hours of being picked. L’Occitane also relies solely on rain showers, eliminating the use of wasteful irrigation systems.

Product I love: Red Rice Purifying Mask, $24

2. The Body Shop - Committed to trading fairly with suppliers, The Body Shop works with small-scale farmers to harvest some of the finest ingredients worldwide. In 2011, they launched the first-ever 100 percent biodegradable shower gel packaged in recycled plastic (talk about reducing carbon footprint)! Additionally,  all products are animal cruelty free AND vegetarian.

Product I love: Shea Body Butter, $20

3. Aveda - On the pursuit of doing business in an environmentally sustainable way, Aveda is the first beauty company to manufacture products with 100 percent certified wind power! Aveda also works to minimize packaging while maximizing the use of recycable materials. Never one to be outdone, Aveda can now boast that more than 90% of their essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients are certified organic.

Product I love: Damage Remedy Restructuring Shampoo, $24

4. Burt’s Bees -  Having come a long way since selling beeswax lip balms and hand salves, Burt’s Bees now has over 150 products, more than half of which are 100% natural. Committed to preserving the environment, Burt’s Bees uses packaging with the highest levels of Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials. They also never test any ingredients on animals.

Product I love: Garden Tomato Toner, $12

Down to Earth

This spring I’ve decided to forgo floral prints and pastel-colored clothing for more neutral, Earth-toned pieces already housed within my closet from winter. Not surprisingly, some of my favorite items from Madewell and J.Crew made the cut (as they tend to do season after season). My staples for this spring? Anything dark denim, suede ankle boots, colored jeans, and gold accented jewelry.

(Denim shirt & boots: Madewell, Jeans: Old Navy, Ring: Forever 21, Scarf: Mom’s)

#Trend(ing)

I’m not one to religiously follow fashion trends (I belong to the know your body type, dress to your body type clan) BUT I can’t deny that I haven’t embraced a good trend every now and then. With that said, today I read a great Refinery29 article that showcased celebrity influencers and the trends they’ve put forth. I loved it so much that I felt compelled to share: http://r29.co/16uklQp. It’s a quick, enjoyable read that hopefully brings back fond memories of trends you may or may not have adopted in the past (or even still rock today).

P.S. If you haven’t seen Annie Hall yet I strongly suggest you do. Diane Keaton is beyond amazing and believe it or not, she may just convert you into an androgynous dresser!

Snowed White

If we’ve learned anything from this year’s NYFW it’s that terrible weather conditions due to storms with less terrifying names (yeah you Nemo) won’t keep a girl from looking her best. Granted I’ll be the first to admit I’m not daring enough to walk around in stilettos à la Carine Roitfeld in a snowstorm, however, I think having a nice sheet of white on the ground is good enough reason to go bold with your makeup; call it a nice backdrop if you will.

These days I’m loving deep crimson colors like the one I’m wearing below (Laura Mercier’s Créme Smooth Lip Colour in Sienna-brick rose). Combined with shimmery gold eye shadow and minimal blush, it’s a healthy combination of being both bold and understated. Happy Winter!

Back in December the color gurus at Pantone announced their color of the year to be a most vivid green known as emerald. Saddened that my local nail salon did not have the jewel tone color, I settled on Essie’s “Going Incognito.” Although the color borders on more of a forest green hue, I must say I really love it; I even feel a bit festive for the month of March! What color are your nails wearing this month?

Lady Love

I’m a sucker for anything sixties, so when I stumbled upon this article of a young Martha Stewart, you better believe I had a girl crush moment. Not only is she a force to be reckoned with in the business world, but girl sure knew how to strike a pose. AMAZING!

Once you’re done swooning over her hair/makeup/clothes and all around awesomeness, I encourage you to visit www.makers.com to learn more about America’s trailblazing women (including Martha) and be inspired to become one yourself!
